Mashhad BookCity hosted a special event called “Sadr Reading” during the first ten days of Muharram this year. The sessions focused on studying and collectively reading the book “Journey of Martyrdom” written by Imam Musa al-Sadr, guided by Professor Seyyed Mohammad Farjadi.
These gatherings took place over 11 evenings from July 7th, starting at 9 PM in Mashhad BookCity.
“Journey of Martyrdom” is the seventh volume in the series “In the Realm of Imam Musa al-Sadr’s Thought” and contains speeches, messages, and articles by Imam Musa al-Sadr about the events of Ashura. In these discourses, Imam al-Sadr explains the purpose behind Imam Hussein’s movement and the objectives of mourning rituals, addressing why we mourn. He also discusses the role of women, particularly Hazrat Zainab, in this historical event.
Imam Musa al-Sadr was a prominent Lebanese-Iranian religious leader and philosopher who played a crucial role in empowering Lebanon’s Shia community in the 1960s and 1970s. He founded the Amal Movement and worked tirelessly to improve the social and economic conditions of the Shia population in Lebanon. His mysterious disappearance in 1978 during a trip to Libya has elevated his status to that of a “vanished imam” in the eyes of many followers.
BookCity, an Iranian bookstore chain with a significant presence across the country, often hosts cultural events like this one. With stores in over 40 cities, BookCity has become a cultural institution in Iran, offering not just books but also serving as a platform for literary discussions, book critiques, and cultural exchanges. The organization’s emphasis on promoting literature and hosting events like the “Sadr Reading” demonstrates its commitment to enriching Iran’s cultural landscape, particularly during important religious observances like Muharram.
